Lesson 5 - The Gospel

The Power Of God To Save

Romans 1:16 "For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek."

What is the power of God unto salvation? _______________

It is the power of God unto salvation to ___________ _________ ______ _____________.

So you cannot be saved by good works or keeping the law, but you can be saved by the Gospel!

Anyone can be saved by the gospel!

Everyone can be saved by the gospel!

You can be saved by the gospel!

The Gospel Defined

1 Corinthians 15:1-4 "Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:"

What was declared unto them? _________________

The gospel is the ________________ of God unto ________________.

The gospel was the means by which they were _______________.

What was declared was also delivered. The gospel was declared to them and the gospel was delivered to them.

The gospel is:

Christ __________ for our ________!

Christ was ________________!

Christ __________ _____________ the third day!

The death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ (the gospel) is the power of God unto salvation.

Why are each of these elements of the gospel critical?

Death

Isaiah 53:5,6 "But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all."

This is a prophecy recorded by Isaiah 700 years before Jesus lived. The “He” in the verses is Jesus.

Jesus was ______________________ for our ____________________.

Our _______________________________ was upon him.

With his _______________ we are healed.

Like sheep we had done what? ________ ____________

The LORD laid what on Jesus? _____ ____________ ___ ___ ____

Romans 4:25 "Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification."

Why was Jesus delivered? ___________________

Romans 5:6-9 "For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him."

For whom did Christ die? ______________

Commendeth – show

How did God commend his love toward us? __________________

We are saved from wrath (hell) through him (Jesus).

2 Corinthians 5:21 "For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him."

Jesus was made what for us?  ________

Did Jesus know sin in his own life? ___________

Jesus was made sin for us that we might be made the ______________________ of God in him.

1 Peter 3:18 "For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:"

Christ _________________ for sins.

It was the ____________ dying for the ___________.

Why did Jesus suffer for sins dying for the unjust? _____________

Burial

Matthew 28:11-15 "Now when they were going, behold, some of the watch came into the city, and shewed unto the chief priests all the things that were done. And when they were assembled with the elders, and had taken counsel, they gave large money unto the soldiers, Saying, Say ye, His disciples came by night, and stole him away while we slept. And if this come to the governor's ears, we will persuade him, and secure you. So they took the money, and did as they were taught: and this saying is commonly reported among the Jews until this day."

A large sum of money was given to the soldiers to say what? __________________________

His burial and spending three days and night in the tomb is important because it authenticates the fact that he did die and that he was resurrected.

Resurrection

Romans 1:4 "And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead:"

The resurrection declares Jesus to be the _______ of _________.

Luke 24:36-43 "And as they thus spake, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you. But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they had seen a spirit. And he said unto them, Why are ye troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts? Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have. And when he had thus spoken, he shewed them his hands and his feet. And while they yet believed not for joy, and wondered, he said unto them, Have ye here any meat? And they gave him a piece of a broiled fish, and of an honeycomb. And he took it, and did eat before them."

To prove his resurrection was a bodily resurrection Jesus appeared to the disciples.

What did they suppose they saw? ____________

What did Jesus say a spirit does not have? _________________________

Did Jesus have these things? ______

What did Jesus show them? ________________

What did Jesus do with a piece of broiled fish and a piece of honeycomb?________________

Acts 1:3 "To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God:"

Passion – suffering and death.

Infallible - incapable of error

Did Jesus provide proof of his resurrection from the grave?

1 Corinthians 15:4-8 "And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time.

Here is a list of some of the people who saw Jesus after he was resurrected.

He was seen of _____________ (Peter).

Then of the ______________ (Apostles).

He was seen of how many brethren at one time? _____________

After that, he was seen of _____________.
Then he was seen of all the ______________.

Did the writer of 1 Corinthians see Jesus after his resurrection? ______________

Romans 4:25 "Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification."

We was raised for our ______________________.

To be justified is to be right with the law.

Our being made right with the law (saved) depends on the resurrection of Jesus Christ. If he was not raised from the dead then he was not who he said he was. If he was not who he said he was he could not do what he said he did!

The question is, How do you make the gospel meaningful on your behalf. That is the issue we will consider in the next and final lesson.
